Wecycle disbanded in 2025, so we are not taking on projects, commissions or collaborations, and we cannot take in plastic waste any more.
We are still the same group of friends, with a lot of knowledge about plastic recycling and the scene here in Oslo. If you have a question about that, or about anything in our portfolio, ask away – we are happy to help where we can.
FAQ
Is Wecycle still active?
No. We made the difficult decision to wind down in 2025. This website stays online as an archive of what we did, and as a way to reach us with questions – but Wecycle itself no longer operates.
How did you come up with this idea?
It started with learning that almost all sorted plastic is sent all over Europe for recycling, which mostly consists of incineration. We saw that as a huge loss of valuable material, plus a lost opportunity for greater innovation in plastic recycling and circular economy systems.
What kinds of plastic did you recycle?
We worked with types 2, 4 and 5, since they possess better qualities for recycling. We had hoped that with more research and infrastructure it would become possible to take on other types too.
Did you build the machines yourself?
Theoretically no, practically yes. The designs of the machines were made by Precious Plastic, and our own technical volunteers as well as volunteering engineers from Engineers Without Borders deserve all the credit.
Where did you get your plastic from?
All of the plastic we used was plastic waste, and all of it was sourced locally. That meant most of it came from different sources in and around Oslo, though we sometimes used plastic from other parts of Norway (such as ocean plastic, for example).
What did you do with funding, investments and revenue?
All funding and revenue went towards covering our expenses. Any additional financial resources were reinvested into the organisation for research and for expanding our influence in the community around Oslo. That is how we kept true to our values as a non-profit organisation.
